New Caledonia - Travel - Back to index

Maré island on Google Maps
The small island of Maré, is located in front of the east coast of New Caledonia and is one of the larger islands that make up the archipelago of Loyalty in the Pacific Ocean. There are two small towns (Tadine and La Roche), but most of the inhabitants live in tribes in the 29 little villages on the island.
The island is known in the archipelago of New Caledonia's for the Festival of Wajuyu, a red fish of the family Lutjanidae who live more than 150 m deep and fished by the fishermen of the Roh village situated on the northern tip of the island of Maré. During the festival, which takes place every year normally between October and November, there are dances, traditional songs and tastings of typical dishes of fish and vegetables.
Thousands of tourists each year reach, with Air Caledonie or with the fast ferries that connect Noumea with the port of Tadine, the green island of Maré to spend some days to see the Festival, between walks to discover the island, baths of sea and sun on the beautiful beaches that overlook the bays or simply to listen to the history and culture of the Kanak tribes that live on the island. On the stalls of the market of Roh, there are not only local agricultural products but also handicraft products purchased by tourists taking part in the great and joyous Festival of Wajuyu.
