Mourres and Mees on Google Maps.
Les Mourres are located few kilometers from the medieval village of Folcarquier (department Alpes-Haute-Provence), known for the presence of famous companies in the field of cosmetics and perfumery finding in the cultivation areas of Provencal lavender. The Mourres are unusual forms of white limestone rock eroded by the wind and rain, natural elements that made some rocks very special sculptures. Walking along the paths that cross the hilly area you can see colonnades and rock masses that resemble profiles of animals like the hen and the turtle, other rocks look like human profiles, others have holes and large windows that overlook the woods of the Durance river valley . A nice walk of few kilometers uphill and downhill paths to discover an unusual landscape. Less than twenty kilometers away from Folcalquier and from the strange shapes of the Mourres, in the valley floor there is another geological peculiarity, Les Mées. Also these formations are agglomerates of stratified sand and rock that form overhanging walls hundreds of meters high. Also in this case the erosion of water and wind have created pinnacles, columns and vertical canyons that deeply mark the walls of the mountain but unlike the Mourres, Les Mées are a single enormous mass of sediments that separates from the mountain form a maze of crevices. Two short itineraries that complement an unforgettable journey through the colors and scents in the Provençal lavender places.
