Suakin on Google Maps.
At the end of the nineteenth century Suakin was a flourishing commercial port in the hands of the English colonialists. The city remained a thriving commercial center until the early 1900s when it was finally abandoned in 1922 due to new trade routes toward Africa continent. Over the years due to earthquakes, tribal wars and predations the town was completely destroyed. The city was built on an island in the middle of a protected bay with only one access to the sea, a strategic position against the assaults of pirate ships and enemy armies. The city was built using coral blocks extracted from the sea of the bay. Even today the coral structures in the walls of the houses are clearly visible. There are projects of reconstruction of the ancient city begun with the renovation of the ancient mosques and the caravanserai. An interesting destination to visit during a journey  for divers in the Sudanese Red Sea.
