The medieval tower of Crest (France)

France - Travel - Back to index

By: Carlo Piccinelli

Crest on Google Maps.
On a hill overlooking the Rhone Valley in Provence, stands an imposing medieval castle built in 1120 by Arnaud Crest a noble of the time. Today, the castle remains only the great stone tower that became, during the French Revolution, a gloomy prison. The tower, square in shape, is made up of different plans and a series of large and small rooms that branch off from the central staircase. The tower of Crest is considered one of the most important historical monuments of France. Takes almost a whole day to visit it all, not only for the number of rooms and halls, but also to the prisons that keep on the walls, graffiti carved by prisoners who tell the dark and violent times of the Middle Ages. An interesting visit to discover one of the most famous monuments of high Provence. Every year in mid-May, takes place in the streets and in the alleys of the village of Crest, the medieval festival with characters in period clothes they parade through the streets until reaching the tower. A journey through history and in the French medieval costumes.
