Mantas by night (Maldives)

Maldives - Curiosity - Back to index

By: Marta Giachini

Fesdhoo Lagoon on Google Maps.
Into the Fesdhoo lagoon, located in Ari Atoll North, there is a particular place where manta rays gather after sunset during the summer, to eat their favorite food, plankton, which thickens on the sandy bottom of the lagoon forming clouds of food. At 9 pm, kneeling on the sand at about -14 m depth, lit by torches, the manta rays (usually 1 to 4), emerge from the darkness with open mouth to capture as much plankton as possible. The manta rays, surrounding divers, creating a dance composed of long glides and rapid loops. One of the many shows that the nature and the sea of the Maldives can offer to those who immerse themselves in the world of the atolls.
