The Great House of the Petit Couli tribe is the meeting place of the chiefs of the communities of Little Couli, Big Couli and Sarramea. In this house, the chiefs discuss the problems and the quarrels among the families that make up the tribe. The Great House is typical of the common Melanesian cultures. Each village of New Caledonia has its Common House built with simple rules but with a strong traditional content.
In front of the house, there is a pole that is the meeting place of the leaders in family quarrel between them. Near the front door, there are the depictions of the Spirit Guides that will encourage tribal leaders, gathered inside the house, on how to solve problems. The discussion takes place inside the house, in front of a fire that " lights the way" to discuss and make the right decision.
The walls and roofs of palm leaf, are typical of Melanesian culture and represent the mother who protects not only from rain and wind the assembly of tribal chiefs but also the words spoken in the house, to not turn them into gossip. A tradition narrated by Kawa Berger, Big Chief of the tribe of Couli and Sarramea.
