Istanbul on Google Maps.
The city of Istanbul extends across the hills overlooking the Bosphorus Strait and the Golden Horn, a fjord that extends for several kilometers into the city and once separated ancient Constantinople from a Genoese colony called Pera-Galata. Today, Istanbul is a single, large metropolis that extends not only along the fjord but also along the eastern shore of the Bosphorus, a narrow waterway just over a kilometer wide in the city, connecting the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean. The river cruise passes imperial palaces such as the Dolmabahce, Beylerbeyi, and Ciragan, ancient fortresses, and several mosques, such as the neo-Baroque Ortakoy. The cruises conclude at sunset, passing the small island of Kiz Kulesi, home to Leander's Tower, also known as the Maiden's Tower. This tower, along with another tower on the opposite bank, served to prevent boats from entering the Bosphorus Strait with a large chain stretched between the towers. Legend has it that an oracle predicted that a sultan's daughter would be killed by a snake on her 18th birthday. The sultan therefore built the tower where he placed the princess. On her 18th birthday, the sultan brought his daughter a basket of fruit as a gift, but hidden among the fruit was a poisonous snake that bit the princess, who died as the oracle had predicted. A cruise through the Bosphorus Strait and the Golden Horn is a wonderful way to end your visit to fascinating Istanbul.
