Ascona (Switzerland)

Switzerland - Curiosity - Back to index

Ascona on Google Maps.
The town of Ascona, located on the Swiss shores of Lake Maggiore, is a renowned holiday destination as well as a city rich in history, art, and culture. Originally a fishing village, over the centuries it has transformed into a tourist destination with a lakeside promenade lined with bars and restaurants, while the center is dotted with small squares and narrow streets lined with shops, boutiques, and art galleries. In 1975, in this ancient town began the history of the Jazz Festival, which until 2004 retained its historic name of Festa di New Orleans, before renaming itself Jazz Ascona New Orleans & Classic. During the ten-day festival, quartets, soloists, and orchestras perform jazz, funk, soul, and swing on the lakeside promenade, in the squares, and in the streets, as crowds of visitors watch, listen, and dance to the rhythms and performances of musicians from around the world. For ten days at the end of June, the city transforms into a colorful stage, featuring over 50 bands, 200 concerts, and free late-night jam sessions. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy a pleasant, fun, and musically engaging vacation, similar to its sister city, New Orleans, only instead to be on the banks of the Mississippi, it's on the shores of Lake Maggiore on the Swiss side.
