Italy - Travel - Back to index

By: Carlo Piccinelli

Selinunte and Segesta on Google Maps.
Founded in 650 BC, Selinunte is located on the hills overlooking the sea. The archaeological site consists of an acropolis, several temples with colonnades, some well preserved, roads that cross the hilly areas and a museum where various finds found on site are exhibited. The archaeological site of Segesta instead stands on a mountain near the city of Calatafimi and not far from Trapani town. The excavations in the archaeological site are still very active and are rediscovering new finds day by day. The archaeological area includes a well-preserved Doric temple from the 5th century BC located on the top of a hill, the theater still used today for shows and historical performances, remains of works from the medieval era and several other excavation sites that concern buildings dating back to the Arab invasion of the territory. A cultural journey into the history of the western part of the island that stimulates the tourist curious to learn about the history of Sicily.
