Italy - Travel - Back to index

By: Carlo Piccinelli

West coast of Sicily on Google Maps.
Leaving Palermo in a northwesterly direction, along the coast you reach the town of Castellammare and a little further, the ancient tuna fishery of Scopello in front of the big rocks that protect the bay, an enchanting place with a beach and clear waters where you can spend a few days of vacation. Continuing you reach the imposing Mount Monaco in San Vito lo Capo, a mountain with a rocky wall overlooking the sea that dominates the gulf that leads to Mount San Giuliano on whose summit there is the ancient village of Erice founded, according to the Greek historian Thucydides, by Trojan exiles and conquered by the Romans around 241 BC. After visiting the ancient village you go down along the coast until you reach the city of Trapani rich in history with museums, squares, gardens and architecture from the Bourbon era with a historic center full of churches, monuments and buildings dating from the 16th to the 19th century and obviously numerous restaurants and trattorias where you can taste typical local dishes based mainly on freshly caught fish.
