Mozambique Island on Google Maps.
Mozambique Island was until 1898 the capital of the Portuguese colony in Africa, before the transfer of the seat of the Mozambique Government in the city of Maputo. Today, the island is testimony to that intersection of domination that have taken place over the centuries: first African, then arab outpost for the slave trade, portuguese until the independence of Mozambique (1975) and, in the end, return with the African people.
World Heritage Site in 1991, Mozambique Island is divided into two zones: in the south the homes of the poorest in the Makuti town (which means straw), while to the north, the city of stone, where are the fortress, the churches and the houses of settlers. Today, Mozambique Island is a place that has stopped the time.
An open-air museum with a wealth of artistic, architectural and cultural heritage that slowly begins to shake off its decadent beauty.
