Cuzco area and Urubamba valley on Google Maps.
The journey from Cuzco begins climbing towards the Chinchero plateau visiting the archaeological site of Sacsayhuaman with its imposing granite walls. On the plateau, the white salt marshes of Maras stand out as a contrast to the dark terrain. Over 3,000 tanks located at 3,385 meters above sea level that collect the water that descends from the mountain and which, by evaporation, collects the ancient salt of the Incas people. The journey continues in the underlying valley of the Urubamba river, the sacred river, passing through small villages up to reach the town of Ollantaytambo and the archaeological ruins of the pink granite fortress with the temple of the sun that dominates the terraced crops around.
